We interviewed band members
Jared Leto, Tomo Milicevic and Shannon Leto — 30 Seconds to Mars — backstage before a concert at the Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan.

Is there any song that you guys love as a group? Or individually?

Tomo:
We have a lot of fun playing our song, “This Is War Live,” from the new
record, “Night of the Hunter,” and the song “Closer to the Edge.” These
songs generate quite a lot of energy in the audience.
Shannon:
And it’s also kind of new for us. This is something that we never
really done before, so it’s exciting to play. Especially with the
interaction with the crowd. We had a bunch of people sing and chant and
stomp and clap on the album. And that’s throughout the CD. And people
come to the shows already knowing that participation and interaction is
pretty overwhelming. And for “Kings and Queens” we have people come up
and sing with us. It’s a big giant party. It’s fun.

Do you guys, not all three of you are brothers, but two of you are. Do you enjoy being in the same band?

Shannon:
Yeah it’s amazing being with my brother. A lot of our creative
influence comes from the same place so we have similar tastes and
similar directions we want to go in. It’s great.

How did you come to love music and writing songs?
Shannon:
We were surrounded by instruments growing up and music. And my mom took
us to a bunch of festivals. So she kind of incorporated us in an early
age and it was just a natural progression from there.
Tomo: That’s pretty much the case for all of us.
Shannon: We’re brothers from a different mother.

This is for Jared. Was it difficult turning down roles in films and TV?
Jared: No. I have commitments to the band so it was the right thing to do at the right time.

Do you have stage fright?
Shannon:
I think it was more for us excitement and just being like totally
excited to be on stage and share what we created for everybody. Your
nerves get kind of tangled up with that.

How did your band get started?
Shannon: Just Jared
and I playing instruments in the bedroom and we didn’t really know why
we were doing it. We were just compelled to do it. We were just doing it
and decided to share the experience with people and we wanted to make —
record what was going on. So we recorded it by ourselves, on a CD at
this guy’s studio, and then we wanted to share this experience with
people. So we started playing out and then we were let’s try and get a
record deal. And that took awhile and then we got a record deal and here
we are.

Has fame taken a toll on your lives in any way?

Shannon:
We don’t really think of that word often or ever. I think the toll,
what you’re asking is, it takes more work, the farther along you go on
this path and making music. It takes a lot of upkeep, maintenance, a lot
of thinking outside of the box and trying to convince other people
about the thoughts outside the box and making it work. You try to
reinvent yourself all the time so that takes a lot of work as well. We
lean on each other for that, and Jared is the forefront of that. He’s
always pushing, pushing and pushing and I think that’s what you have to
do.

What type of music do you each like?

Tomo:
Pretty much across the board. For us and I think I can speak for
everyone, it’s just really some music that excites us and inspires us
and interests us. It can be rock music, or classical music or like
hip-hop or really anything. If it has something in it that catches the
ear, then I think that’s pretty much the kind of stuff we listen to.
Shannon likes listening to a lot of different types of music. Electronic
to heavy metal.

How did you all get your first gig?

Tomo: The first gig for me was at a bowling alley in Michigan
when I was 14 years old sitting in for my friend’s dad’s band. I just
remembered that. It was pretty fun too. That would be considered the
first gig that I played outside of school and that’s when it all ended
for me. After that it was done. It’s funny how playing in front of 20
drunk bowlers, can make you chose your life path.
Jared: Sometimes
you have to make your first gig. You just don’t get it. You have to
make it happen. It’s kind of a common thing the arts of music, you got
to go out and make it happen. For my brother and I we definitely did
that. We had to go and win the opportunity and other than have it be
thrust upon us. That’s an important thing when you’re following your
dreams. You have to earn the right to do it.

What do you like most about being on tour and where have you all gone that you liked the most?

Shannon:
We’ve gone to so many different places. The first thing is to share the
experience with people, the interaction, being on stage and just
sharing what you created with the audience. That’s an awesome feeling.
We’ve played all over the world; we’ve played Russia, Sweden, England,
Germany, Brazil, Japan. We’ve shot videos in China
and the Arctic. There’s so many places that we’ve been and they offer
something different in each of them. I don’t know if there’s just one
place that we loved.

Y at-il une chanson que vous aimez tous en tant que groupe? Ou individuellement?

Tomo: Nous avons beaucoup de plaisir à jouer « This is war » en live, du nouvel album, "Night of the Hunter", et la chanson "Closer to the Edge." Ces chansons génèrent beaucoup d'énergie pour le public.

Shannon: Et c'est également nouveau pour nous. C'est quelque chose que nous n'avons jamais vraiment fait auparavant, alors ça devient passionnant à jouer. Surtout à l'action/interaction de la foule. Il y a un tas de gens qui chantent, piètinent et tapent au son de l'album. Et c'est partout dans le CD. Et les gens viennent aux concerts sachant déjà que la participation et l'interaction est assez primordialement. Et pour "Kings And Queens" Nous faisons monter des gens pour venir chanter avec nous. C'est une grande fête géante. C'est amusant.

Dites, les gars, deux d'entre vous sont frère. Aimez-vous être dans la même bande?

Shannon: Oui c'est incroyable d'être avec mon frère. Une grande partie de notre influence créatrice vient du même endroit parce que nous avons les mêmes goûts et les mêmes orientations. C'est génial.

Comment avez-vous appris à aimer la musique et écrire des chansons?

Shannon: Nous étions entourés par des instruments et par la musique en général, en grandissant. Et notre mère nous enmenés à
un tas de festivals. Alors elle nous a incorporées, à un âge précoce, dans tout ça et c'était juste une progression naturelle à partir de là.

Tomo: C'est à peu près le cas pour nous tous.

Shannon: Nous sommes frères mais d'une mère différente.

Question pour Jared: Etait-ce difficile de tourner dans des films et à la télévision en ce moment?

Jared: Non, mais j'ai des engagements envers le groupe alors c'est la bonne chose à faire au bon moment.

Avez-vous le trac?

Shannon: Je pense que c'est plus de l'enthousiasme que du trac, parce que nous sommes juste ravis d'être sur scène et de partager ce que nous avons créé avec tout le monde. Tes nerfs ne viennent pas s'empêtrer là-dedans.

Comment votre groupe à commencer?

Shannon: Juste avec Jared. On jouait des instruments dans notre chambre et nous ne savions pas vraiment pourquoi nous le faisions. Nous étions obligés de le faire. Nous voulions juste le faire et nous avons décidé de partager cette expérience avec les gens (en enregistrant ce qu'il se passait). Nous avons donc enregistré par nous-mêmes, sur un CD au studio d'un gars, et puis nous avons voulu partager cette expérience avec les gens. Nous avons donc commencé à jouer dehors et puis nous avons essayé d'obtenir un contrat d'enregistrement. Ce qui a pris un certain temps et puis nous avons eu un contrat et nous voilà ici.

La gloire a pris un tournant sur vos vie de quelle façon ?

Shannon: Nous n'avons jamais vraiment penser à ce mot. Je pense que ce tournant, si c'est bien ce que vous demandez, demande beaucoup plus de travail, pour aller le plus loin possible sur cette voie et continuer de faire de la musique. Il faut beaucoup d'entretien, de maintenance, un grand nombre de penser « en dehors de la boîte » et d'essayer de convaincre d'autres personnes au sujet de la pensée « en dehors de la boîte » et faire tout fonctionner. Vous essayez de vous réinventer tout le temps, ce qui prend beaucoup de travail aussi. Nous nous appuyons l'un sur l'autre et Jared est au premier rang de tout ça. Il ne cesse de toujours pousser, pousser et pousser et je pense que c'est ce que nous avons à faire.

Quel type de musique aimez-vous chacun ?

Tomo: À peu près de tout. Pour nous, et je pense que je peux parler pour tout le monde, c'est juste vraiment la musique qui nous excite, nous inspire et nous intéresse. Ça peut être de la musique rock ou de la musique classique ou bien le hip-hop ou je ne sais encore. Si une musique a quelque chose qui attire l'oreille, alors je pense que c'est à peu près le genre de choses que nous écoutons. Shannon aime écouter beaucoup de différents types de musique. De l'électronique au heavy metal.

Comment avez-vous vécu votre premier concert?

Tomo: Mon premier concert a été pour moi à une piste de bowling dans le Michigan quand j'avais 14 ans pour le groupe du père d'un ami. Je m'en suis juste rappelé. C'était assez amusant. Cela a été considéré comme le premier concert que j'ai fais à l'extérieur de l'école. Après, c'était décidé. C'est drôle comment jouer devant 20 quilleurs peut faire que vous avez choisi votre chemin de vie.

Jared: Parfois vous devez faire votre premier concert. Mais vous ne pouvez pas. Vous devez tout faire pour qu'il se produise. C'est un peu une chose commune aux arts de la musique, vous voulez tout faire pour sortir une musique et pour la produire. Pour mon frère et moi, nous avons certainement fait cela. C'est une chose importante quand vous suivez vos rêves. Vous devez gagner le droit de le faire.

Qu'aimez-vous le plus quand vous êtes en tournée et où quel est l'endroit dans lequel vous êtes tous partis que vous aimez le plus ?

Shannon: Nous sommes allés à tellement d'endroits différents. La première chose est de partager l'expérience avec les gens, l'interaction, être sur scène et partager ce que vous avez créé avec le public. C'est un sentiment génial. Nous avons joué partout dans le monde, nous avons joué en Russie, en Suède, en Angleterre, en Allemagne, au Brésil, au Japon.Nous avons tourné des vidéos en Chine et dans l'Arctique. Il y a tant d'endroits où nous avons été et ils offrent tous quelque chose de différents. Je ne sais pas s'il y a un seul endroit que nous avons tous aimé.
